The Sun Rises on Solar Hospitals

10th October 2014

Following the completion of two solar PV installations for Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust, TGE Group has reported further interest from hospitals looking to add solar to their environmental credentials.

“We have recently visited two Midlands hospitals, keen to reduce energy bills,” explains Stephen Davies, Commercial Sales Director.  The hospital estate managers want to include renewables in their energy mix, but the cash is not always available.  We now have two options for hospitals, either install it themselves and get the feed-in tariff and energy savings, or fit for free on our fully funded model.  The latter option is perhaps the most attractive to hospitals as it requires no capital outlay and provides reduced price electricity. The system is fully maintained for free, so there is no extra work for hospital staff and it is gifted to the hospital after 20 years.   This also makes a good news story for any hospital whilst promoting renewable energy and energy efficiency to the wider community.”

The two installations for Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust (SWBH) included the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre at City Hospital and Rowley and Regis Hospital.  The combined 100kWP systems will save the Trust around £6,000 per year and generate an income of over £10,000 a year.  The power generated is enough to supply nearly 60 homes for a year and will cut the hospital’s carbon emissions by 36 tonnes a year. Nick Lane, Estates Compliance Officer, SWBH said: “This is a great achievement for SWBH. It is hoped that the initiative will drive down carbon, help save costs and the environment!”
