Lincolnshire Pig Farm Switches on to Solar

3rd July 2014

Renewable specialists TGE Group has recently completed an ambitious three-phase commercial solar PV installation for Patrick Dean Ltd, a Lincolnshire farming company that produces 14,000 pigs a year for Morrisons supermarket, in order to reduce energy costs at their high efficiency 570 sow pig unit following ongoing concern regarding rising energy bills.

Alastair Priestley, Managing Director of Patrick Dean Ltd, East Mere Farm comments: “Rising energy prices are an ongoing concern to us and we have been looking at ways to reduce risk and costs.  Solar PV is a sound investment both financially and in reducing our exposure to market fluctuations.”

The combined 200kWp solar installation, designed and installed by TGE Group, offers a seven year payback with an impressive 13% return, whilst saving 90 tonnes of carbon per year. With a fairly constant electricity demand throughout the year between heating and cooling, the farm expects to use 100% of electricity generated on site.  The system can be adjusted for heating or cooling and brings in revenue through the Renewable Heat Incentive and Feed-in Tariff schemes.  To ensure optimum performance is maintained and any drop in output is immediately highlighted, TGE Group also installed a monitoring system.

Stephen Davies, Director at TGE Group, adds; “It’s important to select the right renewables for the job and to ensure that the systems are effectively monitored to maintain performance.  There was a great opportunity here for Patrick Dean Ltd to reduce their costs and we are delighted to have helped deliver a double digit return on their investment whilst also protecting them from energy price rises.”

Headquartered in Cheshire, TGE Group has completed over 200 renewable installations for farmers up and down the country, designing bespoke systems that meet individual or site circumstances.  Recent projects include the country’s largest solar thermal array at a Shropshire game farm and an award nominated water/ground source heat pump at a Shropshire poultry farm.  With returns as high as 20%, TGE Group offer the full spectrum of renewable technologies as well as help with funding and ongoing management of the systems.
